Rhone Fest Pt I A Success
Lovell's "Lovers" for Off-Broadway
May 2006

Writers Colin Channer, Glenville Lovell,
What's next following Rhone Fest? We are getting ready for the June 8 - 11 production of Lovers by Caribbean-American writer Glenville Lovell... but more on that later. Until then we hope you'll check out some of the other cultural offerings in the community during the month of May. Classic Caribbean Stage & Screen Series - RECAP
Boy from Bellas Gate makes Good
Trevor Rhone in "Bellas Gate Boy"

From teary-eyed moviegoers at Milk & Honey, to riveted Bellas Gate Boy theatregoers; from heated barbs during the discussion on the direction of Caribbean writing and theatre, to unreserved accolades from civic and cultural leaders, the feedback has been unanimous. The four-event start of the yearlong look at the work of one of the Caribbean’s most celebrated writers was undoubtedly a moment to be cherished! Just under a thousand patrons from New York City, as well as Connecticut, Florida, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Washington, DC took part in the March 17 – 23 events in recognition of Trevor Rhone’s work in film, literature and theatre.

Already there is talk about moving the program to many of these states later in the year. In the mean time, work has begun on the second portion of the project, which will see performances of the plays Smile Orange and Old Story Time during Fall '06.

We are indebted to our friends at the Offices of Deputy Borough President Yvonne Graham and City Councilmember Yvette Clarke; the Brooklyn Public Library, Long Island University and St. John’s University. Additionally we appreciate the support of Andy Herz, Cineflix, Silvernitrate Air Jamaica, Blue Mango Media, CitiMortgage, Excelsior Foods, Grace Kennedy Foods, Grace Kennedy Money Services, HealthPlus, and Western Union. This program was a result of their dedication, generosity and vision.

Susan & Blacka

Just in time for the inaugural Caribbean American Heritage Month... (If you didn’t know that June is ‘National Caribbean American Heritage Month’ , don’t feel bad, this is the first one and now you can act as if you always had this info.)

Well anyway, big tings happening!!

Our first Manhattan production (all the way to Lincoln Center no less!) sees our own Trini-American, Susan Olton-Kennedy locking horns with Jamaican actor/comedian Owen ‘Blacka’ Ellis in Lovers. A man, his wife, an affair (maybe two), a child (make that three) this must be the only immigrant story that has nothing to do with a Green Card and everything with why some of us chase 'The American Dream’.

Barbadian novelist/playwright Glenville Lovell’s touching yet hilarious, tale in which “going home” takes on differing and conflicting dimensions, takes place at Clarke Studio Theater - Rose Building, 70 Lincoln Center Plaza, 65th Street between Broadway and Amsterdam (10th) Avenue, New York, NY

Thursday, June 8 @ 7:00pm
Friday, June 9 @ 8:00pm
Saturday, June 10 @ 3:00pm & 8:00pm
Sunday, June 11 @ 3:00pm

One hand can't clap. We are here because of your interest and support. Thanks! Spread the word and I hope to see you in the theatre!
